Background:

MASAC was established through a collaboration between the Massachusetts Department of Correction and Wellpath through a competitive procurement in 2018 and expanded services with the mission change in 2019.

Philosophy:

MASAC provides a holistic approach to treatment that addresses all aspects of wellness in order for residents to achieve a fulfilling, balanced lifestyle that is free from substance use.

Services:

Provide detoxification and substance use disorder (SUD) services to civilly committed patients. This program serves adult males civilly committed to mandatory treatment by the court for approximately 30-90 days.

Significant Achievements:

  • Interviewed, hired, and completed comprehensive orientation for more than 100 new staff within 60 days during the COVID-19 pandemic

  • Implemented evidence-based programming that incorporates treatment for co-occurring and substance use disorders

  • Expanded programming hours by 150% per resident per day

  • Addition of Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) services to support methadone induction

  • Increased partnerships with community agencies to enhance continuity of care

  • Collaborated with DOC to create a more therapeutic milieu, including addition of safety/security support staff specially trained to appropriately interact with these residents
