Courtney McMurray recognized for life-saving intervention at Florida beach
At Wellpath, we know that caring for others is more than a profession. It is a calling that extends far beyond the walls of a healthcare facility. Recently, that commitment to service was exemplified by Courtney McMurray, a Wellpath nurse in Florida, whose quick thinking and clinical expertise helped save a life during a shocking emergency.i
What began as an ordinary day at the beach quickly turned into a life-threatening situation when a swimmer was attacked by a shark and suffered a severe injury. As panic unfolded around the scene, Courtney immediately stepped forward to help.
Drawing on years of nursing experience and training, Courtney assessed the situation and quickly recognized the severity of the injury, including life-threatening arterial bleeding. Remaining calm under extraordinary pressure, Courtney improvised with the resources available, fashioning a tourniquet from a belt and administering critical first aid measures to control the bleeding until emergency responders arrived.
In those critical moments, Courtney’s actions made a difference.
Whether caring for patients within a correctional facility or responding to an emergency in the community, nurses are continuously assessing situations, recognizing risks, and taking action when others need help most. Courtney’s response serves as a powerful example of the compassion, professionalism, and clinical excellence that define the nursing profession.
Her heroic actions have drawn widespread recognition, including coverage from local news outlets and national media. While such acknowledgment is well deserved, Courtney’s story is especially meaningful because it reflects the values that Wellpath team members demonstrate every day: service, courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to preserving life.
We are proud to celebrate Courtney McMurray and grateful for the difference she continues to make, both on and off the job.
