New program will provide students with critical skills needed to assist justice-involved individuals
ATLANTA – NOVEMBER 8, 2021 – Morehouse School of Medicine’s newest Online Education and Expanded Programs (OEEP) certificate offering will address a challenging aspect in health equity for all – assisting with the needs and issues of justice-involved individuals. The program will be offered in conjunction with Wellpath, the premier provider of high quality medical and behavioral health services to patients in treatment and correctional facilities in the United States.
The A Path Forward: Justice-Involved Care Life Coach Certificate is an innovative, self-directed online certificate geared toward aspiring life coaches interested in working with justice-involved individuals. The courses will equip passionate leaders with the critical skills needed to build positive outcomes and pathways to success. As a part of the Pathway Forward Coaching Certificate, OEEP will offer students who have a bachelor’s degree and successfully complete this four-month certificate guaranteed admission into Morehouse School of Medicine’s Pending SACSCOC Approval Master of Administration in Justice-Involved Care (MAJIC) degree program. Participants will also receive a scholarship.
“The Justice-Involved Care Life Coach Certificate will provide students that seek to work with justice-involved individuals an effective plan for helping these individuals make positive and long-lasting changes in their life,” said Dr. Angelita Howard, assistant dean for Online Education and Expanded Programs and assistant professor at Morehouse School of Medicine. “Students will gain deep insight into this country’s history of incarceration and rehabilitation, data collection and how to is important to improve care, helping individuals navigate complex health and social support systems, and reduce recidivism.”
“Health equity means healthcare for all,” said Dr. Joseph Adrian Tyndall executive vice president for Health Affairs and dean of Morehouse School of Medicine. “We know that incarcerated individuals face higher rates of chronic health problems, substance use, and mental illness than the general population. Initiatives such as the Life Coach Program help address this public health crisis and provides supports and care for those who need it the most.”

The Office of Online Education and Expanded Programs at Morehouse School of Medicine provides online education programs and courses that leverage use of various technologies. The program prepares students for current and emerging careers; roles that not only serve the community, but impact and promote health equity.
The program offerings include:
- The Master of Science in Biotechnology degree (MSBT) provides a foundation in the scientific and business components needed to advance biotechnologies. The program develops comprehensive knowledge in bioscience, core technologies, and analytical methods used to support biotechnology enterprises.
- The Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) develops comprehensive knowledge in the methodologies to acquire, store, retrieve, and use of health information in medicine to support healthcare and clinical research enterprises.
- The Bridge to Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship (B2BB) is a five-week summer program that exposes motivated college students and post-baccalaureate professionals to the biotechnology industry and bioentrepreneurship. This graduate pipeline summer program is a bridge to the online MS Biotech degree and provides a foundation in the scientific and business components needed to advance biotechnologies.
- For students interested in the health informatics field, there is also a Bridge to Health Informatics (B2HI) program, which takes place for five weeks over the summer. Students will develop knowledge and training in health information technologies, healthcare analytics, and its operations, and students can join the online MS in Health Informatics degree program.
In one year, the Bridge to Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship and Bridge to Health Informatics program have grown more than 50%, with 100 students from across the U.S. and around the globe. And Intelligent.com recently ranked Morehouse School of Medicine’s online MSBT program first out of hundreds of programs offered nationwide by institutions such as Harvard, Purdue, and Georgia Washington universities.
